Task Force 401: Army to lead on countering small UAS tech, with buying power - Breaking Defense

The Army has been tapped to oversee the new shop and close up the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office it led. WASHINGTON — The US Army has been tasked with standing up a new Joint Interagency Task Force 401 that is expected to give it broader oversight over tech to counter small drones across the Defense Department and, potentially, further across the federal government, according to a new directive and a defense source. In an Aug. 27 memo, Hegseth goes on to direct Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to close the service-led Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-sUAS) Office (JCO) that had been evaluating the weapons for the services but didn’t have the teeth to enforce purchase. While Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Jame Mingus first teased this plan earlier this summer, this week’s memo sheds new light on the plan.Instead, Hegseth told the Army to set up JIATF 401 to “better align authorities and resources to rapidly deliver Joint C-sUAS capabilities to America’s warfighters, defeat adversary threats, and promote sovereignty over national airspace.”

Fact is I think CV90 is a dead duck as a UK IFV is concerned (it lost last time), Warrior CSP in addition to Ares and Boxer makes zero sense (they use the same engine) and besides whioch the Army never admits to making mistakes. As for Boxer I imagine the cancelation costs would be prohibitive so you may as well just buy them and use them to mount the RCH155 instead of extra orders.Buying IFVs built in the UK for the UK would be a clear Treasury / Defence win, it’s a no brainer and would begin rebalancing Army mobility, lethality and an ability to delete Warrior from ORBAT with her associated maintenance costs and deliver an operational maintenance cost across the tracked Ajax variants. If both answers are yes, let’s buy 300 for the IA brigades. If the answer is no, let’s life extend warrior. ... If it takes as long as it takes to build RN escorts and RFA vessels, they might have to! I see the usual scattering of Army hanging around, will they order anything here or are they still going round in circles?OK mate, just looked this up to remind myself what this is. A 6×6 wheeled APV. So how does this fit with Boxer? I am guessing that they both fit into the mech brigades rather than armoured brigades or should do if we buy the above Ajax IFV, which actually doesn’t look too bad to my uneducated eye.

Here’s how the Army is working to get electronic warfare gear to units faster | DefenseScoop

The Army wants to buy smaller quantities of EW equipment and get it to units and soldiers faster. The Army has struggled for the past 10 years or so to field electronic warfare equipment, especially jammers. Just a few years ago, it added a program-of-record jammer to its arsenal for the first time in over a decade. Now, in an attempt to buy more commercially available systems rather than exquisitely developed ones, and get additional capabilities to soldiers, the service wants to leverage ongoing experimentation. In some cases, we take a little bit … to the lab, but the focus is not to buy it, put it through the production lab line. Instead, we just take it up to the field,” Col. Scott Shaffer, project manager for EW and cyber within program executive office for intelligence, electronic warfare and sensors, said in an interview at the TechNet Augusta conference Tuesday regarding how the Army is trying to get capabilities fielded faster. As part of this ongoing experimentation, the program office, which buys and fields the equipment, and the Army capability manager, who develops the requirements, have been working in greater lockstep with one another.AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Army is using unit experimentation and smaller buys with the aim of fielding electronic warfare equipment to units faster.

It’s a proven system that enhances battlefield performance to meet various mission requirements in various combat situations. In addition to Bradley, the US Army has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems a $322.7 million contract for continued low-rate initial production (LRIP) of the M10 Booker Combat Vehicle, a new assault vehicle for the Army’s Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs).Moreover, the Army continues to modernize and upgrade select Major Defense Acquisition Programs in its FY 2025 request, including Stryker vehicles, upgrading the Abrams Main Battle Tank to the M1A2C System Enhancement Package (SEP) V3 configuration, the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, the M109A7 Paladin 155mm howitzers, and the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV).The US Army is rigorously modernizing its fleet of next-generation combat vehicles by purchasing advanced ground systems.

U.S. approves Canada's planned purchase of $220M worth of light tactical vehicles | CBC News

The U.S. government has approved Canada's request to purchase joint light tactical vehicles for the special forces. (US Army) The U.S. State Department gave the green light Friday for Canada to buy more light, off-road troop transport vehicles. Military planners map out restructuring the Canadian Army, says top soldier · The Liberal government campaigned last spring, in part, on diversifying Canadian defence purchasing away from the U.S. toward other allies. The most high-profile example was Prime Minister Mark Carney's insistence that the $27.7-billion plan to buy F-35 fighters from U.S.Mike Wright, speaking to CBC News’s Murray Brewster while at the NATO training centre in Latvia, says the ‘army we have now is not the army that we need for the future.’ · There are other programs in the pipeline that could be equally troublesome from a political perspective in light of the ongoing trade war launched by U.S. President Donald Trump. Canada also intends to buy P-8 surveillance planes and multiple rocket launcher systems for the army from the United States, as part of the broader rearmament.Neither the request to buy, nor the recent approval "commits Canada to the purchase of the joint light tactical vehicle," said Andrée-Anne Poulin in a written statement. The federal government will review the acceptance and the offer to purchase. A previous version of this story suggested the light tactical vehicles were purchased for the Canadian Army whereas they are being purchased under a separate program for the country's special forces. The decision is likely to add to the existing political headache faced by the LIberal government, which has staked part of its reputation on making fewer defence purchases in the United States.

Army Secretary: Soldiers improvising with credit cards as drone warfare upends battlefield | Fox News

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll reveals soldiers use government credit cards to rapidly buy and test battlefield gear as the military adapts to drone threats and China focus. EXCLUSIVE: Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said U.S. soldiers are improvising with government credit cards to buy and test battlefield gear as they adapt to the exploding drone threat — as the Army shifts its long-term posture toward countering China in the Indo-Pacific.Elite Army units bypass traditional procurement by using credit cards to test new equipment while the service shifts posture toward countering China in the Indo-Pacific.In an interview with Fox News Digital, Driscoll described how elite units like the 75th Ranger Regiment are bypassing the Pentagon’s cumbersome procurement system to test new drones, sensors and weapons in real time. At the same time, he said the Army is aligning with the Pentagon’s assessment of China as the nation’s "pacing threat," building a force optimized for the Indo-Pacific but still capable of deploying worldwide at a moment’s notice.Driscoll pointed out that Congress once gave the Army a dozen broad funding categories it could move money between — say, vehicles in one bucket, drones in another. Today, he said, there are more than 1,400 narrowly drawn "buckets," some tied to specific makes and models, making it nearly impossible to pivot quickly.
